Chemical dependency is a medical illness with a neurobiological basis. Left untreated it will progress resulting in increased loss of function, decline in physical health, accidents, and even death. You need not watch, wait for them to "hit bottom," or remain powerless to help your loved one. Even those who do not want help can be helped, and things can and often do get better. The first step to recovery starts with drug intervention - an act of love and communication of effective boundaries.
